Signs Your HeatShield Damper Kind Is Failing

• Handle spins without resistance. The cable has come loose from the pivot arm or snapped at the top. This is the most common failure we see, and it usually means the cable crimp has corroded through.
• Cold draft even with the damper closed. The damper plate is not seating flush against the frame. Years of soot buildup or a warped plate leaves a gap that acts like an open window all winter.
• You hear a metal-on-metal scrape when operating the lever. The pivot bearings are dry and grinding. If this goes ignored, the pivot arm eventually snaps, and then the damper is stuck wherever it sits.
• Water stains on the firebox floor after heavy rain. A top-mount damper that will not seal lets rain run straight down the flue. We see this in Spring Valley and Suffern homes after the big November storms.
• The damper falls shut on its own. The spring tensioner has failed. You can prop it open temporarily, but that defeats the purpose of having an operable damper in the first place.
