Common DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Rockland County
- 316L flexible liner pitting and perforation in oil-fired flues. Oil boilers produce acidic condensate that eats through 316L stainless from the inside. We regularly find pinhole perforations along the bottom 6 feet of these liners in Rockland County homes that converted to oil decades ago. The pinholes let carbon monoxide and exhaust gases seep into the chimney chase and sometimes into the basement. This is the most common DuraFlex failure we see, and it’s a carbon monoxide risk, not just a draft problem.
- Pro Series rigid liner joint separation at elbows. Thermal cycling in the Hudson Valley runs hot-cold, hot-cold through winter and into March. That repeated expansion and contraction loosens the elbow joints on rigid Pro Series sections over time. Once a joint separates even slightly, creosote starts leaking out of the seam and building up behind the liner where you can’t see it. By the time you smell it, it’s been leaking for a while.
- AL 29-4C liner deformation and collapse. The AL 29-4C alloy is thinner than 316L and built for gas appliances. When an oversize AL 29-4C liner gets crushed into a tight masonry flue, it deforms. We’ve pulled collapsed sections out of chimneys in Spring Valley and Stony Point where the liner looked fine from the top but was flattened halfway down. A crushed liner can’t vent properly, and that’s how flue gas ends up back in the house.
- Oval-to-round adapter pop-outs at the appliance collar. DuraFlex oval-to-round adapter kits bridge the gap between an oval appliance outlet and a round liner. When the adapter isn’t properly secured, or when the appliance vibrates during operation, the adapter can pop loose at the collar. That gap lets flue gas spill directly into the room. We see this most often on fireplace inserts in older Rockland County homes where the original liner was a hack job from the start.
- Top plate and storm collar leaks around the chimney crown. Rockland County’s freeze-thaw cycle hits hard through winter and into March. Water gets under the top plate, freezes, expands, and breaks the seal. By spring, you’ve got water running down the outside of the liner and into the masonry. You usually can’t see pinholes from the top or bottom without a camera. But you can smell them. If you have an oil boiler venting through a 316L liner and you catch a weak exhaust smell in the basement or near the chimney chase, that’s often condensate having eaten through the liner wall. Usually not. A standard Chimney Cleaning & Sweep can be done through the liner with the right brushes, as long as the joints are intact and the elbow sections haven’t separated. If we find joint separation during the pre-sweep inspection, we’ll tell you before we start brushing. Brushing a liner with a separated elbow can push creosote out of the joint and behind the liner, which is worse than not sweeping at all.
You would need a round-to-round adapter, not an oval-to-round. The oval-to-round kit exists for situations where the appliance outlet is oval and the liner is round. If your fireplace insert already has a round outlet, we’d use the matching round connector, or we’d fabricate a proper transition. A mismatched adapter is how flue gas spills into the room, and we won’t leave a transition that doesn’t fit tight.
316L stainless, no question. Wood stoves burn hotter than oil or gas, and the creosote they produce is more corrosive. 316L handles the higher heat and the acidic creosote better than AL 29-4C, which is designed for gas. This matters more in Rockland County than in many places, because so many local homeowners burn locally-cut or neighbor-supplied firewood that hasn’t been seasoned properly. Green wood produces heavier creosote, and heavier creosote punishes a liner faster.
Sometimes it can be resealed with high-temperature silicone and a new storm collar. But if the top plate itself is warped or the collar has rusted through, replacement is the honest fix.
